How to make a room feel larger with proper finish selection

Did you know that color selection can have a lasting impact on how large your interior space feels? Here are a few quick and easy ways to make a space feel larger than it really is:

  1. Proper color selection:

    • Light paint colors tend to recede, meaning they feel further away. Dark colors tend to advance towards the eye, making them feel closer. If you want a long and narrow room to appear more square, you can paint the end walls (the shorter ones) a dark color and leave the long walls a light color. To the eye the light colors will “push out” and appear larger, while the further dark wall will “come forward” to the making the room feel more appropriate.

    • A light ceiling color can make a space feel taller and more spacious while a dark ceiling makes a room shorter.

    • Warm colors also act as dark colors in the way that they appear closer to the eye than light or cool colors.

    • Take a look at our pinterest page for some of our favorite color schemes. Mikowski Painting Pinterest

  2. Add contrast:

    • Consider adding some visual interest to the room with stripes! Vertical stripes can make a room feel larger, while horizontal stripes make the room feel smaller.

    • Add a pop of color with an accent wall or wall covering.

    • Don’t forget the floors and ceiling finishes. A fresh coat of white paint on the ceiling can do wonders for the space. Light reflects from bright white surfaces, so be sure to select light fixtures that offer up and down lighting when possible. A contrasting floor finish can add depth to the room and make you feel grounded in a light and bright space.

  3. Highlight the architectural features:

    • A quick way to enhance a room with paint is to highlight it’s features. If your room has crown molding, decorative trim or window casings, consider painting them a complementary color to highlight them. Often this is done with a bright white to add a balancing contrast to the space.

  4. Proper sheen selection:

    • All paints and sheen’s are not created equally. We can discuss in detail why to use various finishes such as flat, eggshell, satin, mildew resistant coatings, semi gloss trim paints.  We can help you make the proper selection to help aesthetically but functionally as well. Here is a paint finish guide we recommend as a starting point.

  5. Think Beyond Paint too:

    • There are many other ways to refresh a room. While we are experts when it comes to paint, we also have an interior designer on staff that is available to talk in more detail about your project goals.
